A robotic hair transplant is a minimally invasive, outpatient hair transplant procedure in which key steps are performed with the microscopic precision and reliability of the ARTAS® Robotic System.

In a robotic hair transplant, naturally occurring groups of one to four hairs, called follicular units, are extracted one at a time from the scalp. They are then placed into recipient sites created in the balding area where they grow permanent, natural hairs.
The ARTAS robot orients its robotic arm to the donor area in the back of the patient's scalp and the optical system selects a follicular unit to extract.

In rapid succession, the dual punch tool scores the skin around the follicular unit then cuts deeper to separate the unit from surrounding tissue. The optical system then selects the next follicular unit to extract and the robotic arm orients to the target. This process is repeated until sufficient follicular units have been harvested.

The robot can also create recipient sites, tiny incisions where grafts will be placed, according to a design developed by the physician. Once recipient sites are made, the grafts are meticulously placed in the sites where they grow permanent hairs.
The ARTAS Robot uses its precision optical guidance system to virtually eliminate human error from the harvesting process in a Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant.

When performed with hand-held instruments, FUE is a labor-intensive process that requires the surgeon to maintain focus and accuracy over sessions as long as eight hours. The consistency and precision of the ARTAS robot greatly reduce the risk of damage to follicular units caused by human error. With fewer damaged follicular units, more survive the transplant and the aesthetic outcome of the hair transplant is improved.

Robotic FUE requires no stitches, leaves no noticeable scarring, and has no post-operative limitations on physical activity.
